Like God, in who’s image he is made in, man is a triune being. Spirit, soul, and natural body. As such the redeeming plan of God for man has three facets which are often confused as one and the same. Born again of a new spirit; salvation; and a resurrected body
Being born again of a new spirit (and dying to the old), is the remedy for the corrupt human spirit of Adam we are born with. A resurrected Body that is not made of natural elements but supernatural elements such as the bodies of angels are. This replacement body is the remedy for our corrupt natural body which has been the instrument of sin. And salvation is for the soul—the real man. We receive a new spirit and a new body dying to the old spirit and natural body, however, if we were to get a new soul, we would cease to exist because the soul is the real man; who you really are. Therefore, the remedy for the soul is to salvage it through conviction that comes about by having a new spirit perception of life. That is the spirit perception of Jesus Himself. That is what the writer of Hebrews was trying to communicate in the following verse.
Heb 4:12 For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart
God’s words are like a surgical knife that can separate our soul from our corrupt human spirit, then from our corrupt human body. It is said about the animating power of spirit that makes the body alive, that the life is in the blood. And it is the marrow which produces blood. However, to the soul itself those very words and the Spirit behind them that surgically separated the soul from the spirit, and body salvages the soul by exposing, and convicting the corrupt thoughts and purposes it has, giving it opportunity to be cleansed of them through repentance. I believe this is along the lines of what Jesus was talking about when He said, pluck out your eye (perhaps spirit) and cut off your hand (the body) and enter the kingdom maimed (with only your soul).
